چکیده

The developments in textile technology now enable the weaving of conductive wires into the fabrics. This allows the introduction of electronic components such as sensors, actuators and computational devices on the fabrics, creating electronic textiles (etextiles). E-textiles can be either wearable or non-wearable. However, regardless of their form, e-textiles are placed in a tightly constrained design space requiring high computational performance, limited power consumption, and fault tolerance. The purpose of this research is to create simulation models for power consumption and fault behavior of e-textile applications. For the power consumption model, the power profile of the computational elements must be tracked dynamically based upon the power states of the e-textile components. For the fault behavior model, the physical nature of the e-textile and the faults developed can adversely affect the accuracy of results from the e-textile. Open and short circuit faults can disconnect or drain the battery respectively, affecting both battery life and the performance of the e-textile. This thesis describes the development of both of these models and their interfaces. It then presents simulation results of the performance of an acoustic beamforming e-textile in the presence and absence of faults, using those results to explore the battery life and fault tolerance of several battery configurations.

Decreasing Power Consumption of a Medical E-textile

In this paper we present a novel design of a wearable electronic textile. After defining a special application, we used the specifications of some low power, tiny elements including sensors, microcontrollers, transceivers, and a fault tolerant special topology to have the most reliability as well as low power consumption and longer lifetime. We have considered two different conditions as normal...

Fault-Tolerant Networks for Electronic Textiles

Given the dynamic and harsh environments of electronic textile applications, particularly wearable computers and large-scale sensor networks, fault-tolerance is necessary. The interconnection network should route around faults in communication links and processing nodes. The mechanisms of error detection and route change decisions will be presented. Simulation results of the full network are re...

A Low-Power, Reconfigurable Fabric Body Area Network for Healthcare Applications

Body Area Networks (BANs) are gaining prominence for their capability to revolutionize medical monitoring, diagnosis and treatment. This thesis describes a BAN that uses conductive fabrics (e-textiles) worn by the user to act as a power distribution and data communication network to sensors on the user’s body. The network is controlled by a central hub in the form of a Base Station, which can e...

Power Aware Methodologies for Wireless Microsensors

Microsensors are used in monitoring functions in several hazardous and non reachable places. At such places human intervention is impossible so battery replacement is impossible and hence nodes do not have access to unlimited energy. Thus, designing fault-tolerant wireless microsensor networks with long system lifetimes can be challenging. In order to prolong system lifetimes, energy-efficient ...

Compensation of Voltage Disturbances and Downstream Fault Currents Reduction by Using a New Topology of DVR-FCL

The growing rate of energy consumption is a reason for establishment of new power plants which leads to increment in fault current level. One of the solutions to overcome this problem is utilization of fault current limiters (FCLs). Another concerning issue in energy generation is the satisfactory voltage quality in grid and to deal with it, a power electronic based device, known as dynamics vo...
